Know everything about Cardiac Device Assessment

What is a Cardiac Device Assessment?

A cardiac device assessment is a procedure that evaluates the function and performance of implanted cardiac devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators.

How long does it take for Cardiac Device Assessment?

The duration of a cardiac device assessment can vary depending on the complexity of the device and the patient’s individual needs. Typically, the assessment itself takes around 10-15 minutes to complete. However, additional time may be required for consultation with the cardiologist and any necessary adjustments to the device. Patients should plan on being at the clinic for at least 1-2 hours for the assessment and any follow-up care.

Who needs a Cardiac Device Assessment?

Patients who have a pacemaker or defibrillator implanted may require regular assessments to ensure that the device is functioning correctly and delivering appropriate therapy when needed.

How is a Cardiac Device Assessment performed?

During the assessment, a technician will use a specialised device called a programmer to communicate with the implanted device and evaluate its function. The programmer is placed over the chest where the device is implanted and the technician will review the data and make any necessary adjustments.

Does someone need to accompany a patient for a Cardiac Device Assessment?

While it is not required, it is generally recommended that patients have someone accompany them for a cardiac device assessment. The patient may experience some discomfort or dizziness during the procedure, and having someone there for support can be helpful. Additionally, if any changes are made to the device, the patient may be advised not to drive for a short period afterward, so having someone to provide transportation is important.

What happens after the assessment?

After the assessment, the technician and cardiologist will review the data and make any necessary adjustments to the device. The patient will also receive recommendations for ongoing care and follow-up appointments as needed.
